About the Photographer

Better yet, how about something about you? Or perhaps, what is something you want to know about me?

Enough of that though, some basics: I’m Rabi. That is my full name; short, sweet, and simple. Born and raised in good old Vancouver, British Columbia, studying at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Arts (3rd Year) and majoring in Political Science. Academically, that’s about it!

Photography has played an enormous role in my life and I hope for it to remain so. It’s a way for me to express myself and learn about the world around me; be it socially, visually, or mentally. Curious about something? Feel free to ask a question here in the comments below or email me a question (or two) at rabi.sun@live.com

Not into that? Feel free to follow me at my blog: http://rabisun.wordpress.com/

    Hi Rabbit!!

remember me? i met you one day in irving because you were with steph and kahlil who knew glenda who i went to highschool with (haha, long explanation)

out of the spur of the moment (as you can probably tell by the timestamp), i remembered your blog, and it got me thinking.

you know how you want to improve your photography by taking as many photos as you can of people on campus? well, i have a similar (-ish) goal that i’ve only just kinda thought about recently. i want to improve my skills as an artist. so i was wondering if i could draw the portraits you’ve taken? ill start from the beginning too, so that every face (hopefully) will have its own drawn portrait.

just a thought. how’s that sound to you? maybe i’ll make a blog too and make it a sister site to your blog (?). that is, if you wouldnt mind …

    so, yeah! gimme a shout!

    Anna =)

ps: this is REALLY a spur-of-the-moment idea, but id like to think a good one (?). what do you think?

pps: i realize that youve actually taken a couple HUNDRED photos, and only thus far, so maybe i wont draw every one … who knows?

    Hey Anna,

I sent an email to you, but I’m not sure if you have received it.

    Regards,

    Rabi

hey Rabi. I was looking through your pictures and was thinking that they could really be improved in the area of composition (also more subtle areas such as lighting). If you’re interesting in improving your work and hearing a more in depth version of my critique send me an email.

Just wanted to let you know that this is an AMAZING project. I’m an avid photographer myself, but these photos are just so astounding how you really manage to make people smile for your camera. Not a fake smile either, very good job.

    • Rabi says:

      Thanks Alex!

I really appreciate it. I can’t take credit for their smiles. Those smiles are their smiles and it is really thanks to them for putting up with me and doing whatever it is they do in front of the camera. I’m just there to document that random moment.

      Again, thank you.

      Regards,

      Rabi

    Hi Rabi,

Beautiful photos. It’s amazing to see what a smile can do for a picture (and not to mention, how well it goes with each individual answer). I am currently the Communications Assistant for the Faculty of Arts, and your project/blog has been brought to my attention. That said, I am very interested in asking you a few questions about your craft & inspirations to be featured on our Arts website (www.arts.ubc.ca) and ArtsWire (wire.arts.ubc.ca). Please email me if you’d like to be our feature student for this month.

Thanks, and keep up the great work.
    Frances

Stumbled on the “Portraits of UBC” page on Facebook. Love the photos! For some reason the smiling faces make me feel happy and proud of being a UBC student. I think that this is an awesome project. Keep up the good work!

      Thanks Wen Wen,

Glad to hear it and glad to hear that you feel happy and proud being a UBC student. Sorry for replying back so much later. Distracted with school among other things.

      Regards,

      Rabi

    Hey Rabi!

I’m a big fan of your work! It’s awesome. It gives a sense of community and warmth to see the smiling faces of UBC students. I think it’s a good idea to take photos of scenery around UBC, or candid pictures of students hanging out together. It’ll be awesome!

I hope to see you around on campus, because I think you never took a picture of me! Haha jokes jokes :P.

    All the best!

    • Rabi says:

      Hi Edward,

Sorry for not replying earlier, but it is summer and such =P. So without further adieu, thank you and I believe we are friends on Facebook now.

Should by chance I do find/see you or you see me feel free to introduce yourself.

      Regards,

      Rabi
